Book Review: Lemon Meringue Pie Murder

Lemon Meringue Pie Murder (Hannah Swensen, #4)Lemon Meringue Pie Murder by Joanne Fluke

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hannah Swenson's dentist friend, Norman, bought a house which he plans to tear down in order to build he and Hannah's "dream house" on the land. Before demolition can begin though there's a body found in the basement.

Hannah swears she's not going to get involved this time, but it seems all her friends and family want her on the case. They all seems to be personally vested and want her help. Mike doesn't seem too upset by it this time (maybe because he's too worried about Norman and this dream house), so she decides it can't hurt to look into things.

I really do enjoy this series, but they're not books that I find myself wanting to tell all my friends about. I don't know if it's because compared to the other two series of the lady sleuths I've been reading, this one just isn't as exciting and laugh out loud funny or what, but again, I do enjoy them. Though all the pieces didn't come together until the end, I kind of had a feeling early on who might be involved. Fluke keeps the story entertaining though, so it didn't bother me that the suspect was a little predictable. All in all it was a good read.

Book Review: The 7th Month

The 7th Month :A Detective D.D. Warren StoryThe 7th Month :A Detective D.D. Warren Story by Lisa Gardner

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Detective D.D. Warren is on desk duty, not because of a pending investigation but because she's 7 months pregnant. She's holding down the fort during a lunch hour when in walks a sketchy looking fella asking for a detective. Turns out he's a movie producer and needs a cop to help with the authenticity of the actions in the movie. Seems his current consultant, a retired cop, up and left for vacation leaving the producer in a bit of a jam. When he gives D.D. a figure she's seeing dollar signs in the baby's college fund and figures it can't hurt to sit around in her off time and point out that cops don't turn their backs on suspects or leave their holsters unclipped while standing next to a suspect.

D.D. agrees to help out, but she makes a few calls before she joins them on the set. Turns out the vacationing consultant wasn't vacationing at all. Her boss encourages her to cancel the gig, but D.D. is anxious to do a little recon before her team descends on the set.

During an unexpected scuffle after a scene she encounters another insider on the set. It's then that she figures out the motive behind the "little vacation" and sets in motion a plan of her own to get a confession. She enlists the help of her boyfriend (and baby's father) who is patiently awaiting an answer of whether she will move in with him or not. Things seem to be working on out when...

Well, I don't want to ruin it for you ;-) This was a short story for between the books. It wasn't an emotionally involved case as hers usually are, but it was an enjoyable quick read.

Book Review: The Final Confession of Mabel Stark

The Final Confession of Mabel StarkThe Final Confession of Mabel Stark by Robert Hough

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Final Confession of Mabel Stark is the fictional telling of the life of Mabel Stark, world famous tiger trainer for the circus. While the story covers some basic truths the author takes some controversial liberties (sexual in nature) in filling in the gaps. This didn't bother me, but some may take offense- consider yourself warned.

Mabel Stark (whose real name was Mary Haynie) was clearly an incredible woman. She went from cooch dancer to world renowned tiger trainer seemingly overnight. She did things under the big top that no other trainer was capable of. Despite having had some major run ins with a few of the big cats, she kept right on living her dream. She never let anyone or anything get in her way.

I found it interesting to see the differences from that time period to now. The circus travelling from town to town via train. How the workingmen and performers would set up for a night or two, hit the town on nights off, and pack up to do it all over again a couple towns over the next day. I also found the stories of her various marriages rather compelling. Though the real number was 6, I believe only 5 were depicted in the story. My favorite was Art, as was hers it seems.

There was plenty going on, but it didn't seem to be a page turner for me. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the book though! It was an interesting story, but not for the faint of heart.

Book Review: Only the Strongest Survive

Only the Strongest SurviveOnly the Strongest Survive by Ian Fox

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

This book starts off with a bang when corporate head honcho Emely Donnovan is kidnapped. Initially it's unclear what their motives are, though she suspects they want her money. These kidnappers hold a grudge though and money is not what they're after... at least not at first. It seems one has a change of heart, in more ways than one.

Unfortunately, that little synopsis does more justice than I feel the book is worth. While the storyline could have been exciting, I believe it was poorly executed. Like I said, it started off with a bang, which I generally appreciate, but after that it was quick to fall apart.
There were many inconsistencies, not only in the reality of things, but in the story itself. In the opening chapter it states Emely is 49, but later in the book it says she's 29. After she's kidnapped it goes from saying "hours" to "days" when referring to the same stretch of time. When others talk of how long they've known her, one person tells the police only a couple of years but then later says he's known her from when she was in an orphanage, then goes on to tell how he met her at a party.

Normally I can read a book in a matter of a couple days. With the poor writing, I just couldn't get into this book. I feel like the author spent too much time on areas that weren't really relevant to the story or worth that much time and then grazed by on areas where more details should have been given. There were a few really good lines in there, but I often felt like the story was being told to a child (though the content would have been much too harsh). The dialogue was very weak and unrealistic given the situation and circumstances presented in the story. It sometimes made me wonder if it had been written by two different people or if someone helped out with certain sections. Some parts would be okay and I'd think I could get past it, then wham, all the placating nonsense would be back. Maybe it's due to the author being from a different country and possibly some emotions, dynamics, and drama got lost in translation. I don't know, but the writing style just wasn't up to par for my taste.

Some people had a problem with the idea of Stockholm's Syndrome in this book. I think written properly it could have worked very well with this story. As it was though, the proper time wasn't invested into showing how the dynamic between the two changed. It showed a poorly developed male character going from wanting to kill her to being hopelessly in love with her. She seems strong at first, but then suddenly her strength dissolves against him. It just doesn't work like this...

I'll be honest, I read some reviews to see if others felt the same way I did after having read this book. It appears people did not feel the same, or they were a little nicer than maybe they should been since the book had been provided to them for review. Writing false reviews does not help anyone... it doesn't help the customers looking for something good to read, and it certainly doesn't help the author, that is, if he wants a truly helpful critique. I hope I don't seem to harsh and that the author understands I'm just being honest. hopefully he can take the criticism and learn from it for any future books.

While I would love to always have nice things to say, especially when having been given the product for free in exchange for the review, sadly, it doesn't always work out that way. I wish Mr. Fox lots of luck in his future writing.

6 Years Without Her

Mama
1960-2006

Today marks six years since my Mama passed away. What I wouldn't give for one more day with her...  I miss her more and more each day. I still find myself thinking of calling her to tell her something the kids have done, or about a great pair of heels I found that she'd love. It still hurts to know my kids will never know her, or that my husband only got to meet her a couple times. She was an amazing person and it's a shame we're missing out on that today. I hope I'm making her proud. I am who I am today because of her. She taught me so many valuable lessons I hope that I am able to pass on to my children. Love you, Mama!

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me
It could be for anything
I didn't ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished, for one more day with you

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you

First thing I'd do, is pray for time to crawl
Then I'd unplug the telephone
And keep the TV off
I'd hold you every second
Say a million I love you's
That's what I'd do, with one more day with you

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again
I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you

Leave me wishing still, for one more day
Leave me wishing still, for one more day

Book Review: Love You More

Love You More (Detective D.D. Warren #5)Love You More by Lisa Gardner

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Trooper Tessa Leoni is discovered beaten in her own home next to her husband who's been shot with her state issued Sig Sauer. What's not been discovered is her six year old daughter. Tessa is saying the shooting was justifiable as she feared for her life, but it wasn't until after she'd killed him that she realized her daughter was missing.

Detective D.D. Warren isn't so sure she buys all that. Things just don't feel right to her and she's on a mission not only to find little Sophie Leoni, but to straighten this whole mess out. All the while she's got her own mess to straighten out...

I think I like Lisa Gardner's writing more and more with each book I read. She starts off with a bang, immediately grabbing your attention and refusing to let go. She writes in a way that gives you intriguing little details here and there that seem to mean one thing but then take you by surprise when she reveals the big picture. She manages to put you in the heads of different characters without confusing you or the perspective which I really enjoy.
If you haven't read her books I strongly suggest you give them a try!

5 Question Friday

So it's finally Friday. We've almost made it to the Final Four Civil War! Or the Battle for the Bluegrass!! Or the Clash of the Commonwealth!!! Whatever they're calling it, it's going to be big around here, I can tell you that for sure!! It's a sea of red and blue here at my work, where coincidentally not much work is being done. Hmm... The weather is great and I'm hoping it holds out for tomorrow so all the folks having parties and cookouts can really enjoy it. Me? I'm staying home, where it's safe. Where I can yell, holler and curse without fear of getting myself in trouble ;-) I'm making some yummy goodies to veg on and I'll post the recipes here soon.

And in case you're wondering, I'm in RED!

GO CARDS!!!

Anyway, thanks for stopping by from My Little Life for 5Q Friday! Glad you're here. Feel free to check things out, but be forewarned, this is a new one, so not much is going on just yet. I'll get there someday... Anyway, on to my answers...

1. What giveaway would you like to do on your blog? Hmm... well, I'd be happy to do just about any giveaway right now. Something fun for kiddos, gift cards, the latest techy gadgets... but seeings how I haven't done much on my blog yet to warrant anyone wanting to host a giveaway here (besides book reviews) I'd guess a book giveaway would make the most sense for my blog right now.

2. If you had to choose between natural artistic ability and natural athletic ability, which would it be? That's a toughy. If I had natural athletic ability would I be thinner? Maybe, since I'd be more inclined to do more athletic things, like, oh, I don't know... run?! If that's the case then I'd go with athletic. Yep. Definitely atheltic.

3. Do you ditch the coat the minute it becomes "spring" or are you a holdout for more cool temps? I definitely ditch the coat... if I ever had it to begin with. I'm notorious for not wearing a jacket. My mother-in-law (God love her) is always harping on me about it. She even bought me a coat a couple Christmas ago and out of guilt I wore it for as long as was required that season. Thankfully it's too big now, so I don't feel so bad that I haven't worn it- at all- this season. I'm hot natured, so I just don't see the point in bundling up to go from the house to the car, to then sweat my butt off because everyone else is always so cold and has to crank the heat up so they feel like they're in the tropics to something. To then make the quick dash into the mall or grocery store where I will promptly remove the jacket because again I'll be freakin' hot. Then what do I do with the dang thing? I have to carry it around all day? Gone are the days where you can tie it around your waist... So yeah, if I've been donning a coat at all during the winter, as soon as I get the first inkling that Spring is about to be sprung, that puppy is headed for the closet. Way in the back :-)

4. What would you do if you won the mega millions lotto of 1/2 billion dollars? What wouldn't I do? Let's see, practically I'd pay off any and all debt immediately. I'd give my friend C a million (we already talked about that). We'd probably buy property in the country near my in-laws to build a new house. I'd plan a nice Disney vacation- maybe a week at the parks then a week on a cruise. We're talking ASAP. That way we kind wind down, let it all sink in, and ponder, in peace, what we need to do from there. There'd be investments for retirement, education, setting the kids up for life, all that. I'd put the kids in private school. Then we'd begin to take care of our loved ones, paying off mortgages and car loans, maybe upgrading some people. I guess we'd be doing the same thing as any other person would if they're so lucky.

5. You are at a hotel by yourself...what do you do? Oh, fun! Does this hotel have spa services? If so, sign me up for a massage please! Then I'll relax by the pool for a while, read a book, sit in the jacuzzi. Later that night I'd grab dinner at the hotel lounge, have a few drinks, and people watch... supposing there are people to watch. What kind of hotel is this anyway? Are there any special events in the area? Is it crowded? Hmm... maybe I should just leave it with what I said before...
